Explore Ngezi Forest Reserve and Vumawimbi Beach on Pemba Island
This tour suits nature lovers interested in wildlife and history, located on the northern tip of Pemba Island, Tanzania.
Description
Explore Ngezi Forest Reserve, a 1,476-hectare protected area featuring one of the last remaining primary forests in western Pemba. The forest resembles East African highland rainforests more than Zanzibar’s lowland forests.
Admire the forest’s double canopy with towering trees such as mgulele, mwavi, mtondoo, and mvule, which can reach heights of up to 40 meters. Spot endemic wildlife including the Pemba Flying Fox, a bat species unique to the island, along with bird species like Pemba sunbirds, green pigeons, and scops owls.
Visit the historic Ras Kigomasha Lighthouse on Pemba’s northwest tip. Built in 1904 by The Chance Brothers Limited from Birmingham, it features a distinctive corrugated iron structure uncommon in the region.
End the tour at Vumawimbi Beach on the east side of the Ngezi peninsula. This remote white sand beach is bordered by pristine forest and is accessible by a 15-minute boat ride from Manta Resort. Swim, snorkel, or relax by the water and enjoy seasonal fruits and refreshments.
