Dubai is known for cheap gold. In fact, it is also known as the City of Gold. If you are in the market, or are simply looking for the experience of walking the narrow alleys and capturing the sites and sounds of the traditional souk, then a visit to the Dubai Gold Souk is definitely worthwhile.
The Gold Souk is situated in Deira, in the old part of Dubai. It is easily recognizable from its entrance and by the blinding yellow glitter. Two enormous wooden gates welcome visitors to endless windows of dazzling displays.
There are more than 300 jewelers situated in the strip. In the afternoon and early evening the streets are alive and bustling with people. You will find both traditional and modern designs of gold which come in various colours and karats. In addition to gold, the souk also houses precious stones and semi-precious gems like diamonds, rubies, emerald, sapphires and pearls. Prices are very reasonable and largely determined by weight, rather than design and craftsmanship as in western markets.
The Government keeps tight control over the quality of all the merchandise, so rest assured that your purchases will be genuine. You even get a certificate of authenticity when purchasing certain gems and stones - the same however cannot be said of street vendors selling fake watches and handbags. If something in the window catches your eye, step inside and be sure to haggle. Be prepared to walk away if a deal doesn't meet your approval. You are likely to see merchants drop their asking price with such a response.
Generally, the best time to visit the Gold Souk is in the evenings. Shops are well lit, and it is more attractive to watch the gold sparkle in the night light. Most shops are open until late evening (10 pm) so you can take your time when shopping at night.
